The cast iron burns warps and burns itself out over time. The inside top falls into firebox.

Good heater. Had trouble with it back puffing smoke the first couple of years. Put in new double wall chimney and completely changed the performance. Will burn all nite at sub-zero temp. Catalyst will last 4-5 years.

It's really not a very good stove. You'll spend a lot of time repairing it, very poor draft compared to my old stove. I'm not impressed with it and the dealer was useless.

I have burned at least 60 cords of wood in mine since the mid nineties. It burns remarkably clean. When I clean the chimney in the spring(masonry, round flue) I get very little creosote. It is not as easy to use as my my non catalytic (in my shop) but it holds the heat very well and I rarely have to restart it in the morning. There is a little back puffing depending on the weather but I have ...

We bought the stove in 2001 and we have had trouble with it puffing smoke since. We have contacted the company twice and have tried both their suggestions with no luck. It sure is easy for them to say it is operator error. My husband owns a robotics company, I think he can figure out a wood stove. I don't touch it, I am so tired of the house filling up with smoke and the furniture smelling of ...

We purchased a house that has this stove in the fireplace as a permanent insert. I have yet to figure out how to use it properly. It's huge but does not seem to be able to heat up the first floor. The temp. probe on the top rarely goes over 800 degrees and usually remains around 500 degrees. I've had 3 backpuffing incidents and could not figure out the reason why other than the cat.converter ...

I have the old model #FA288CCL Extra Large bought in 1984 when cat stoves were a new innovation. Excellent stove that has paid for itself over and over again. I've burned untold cords of wood (it likes black locust the best) and have replaced the combustor (4 times), center grate, probe thermometer, and combustor housing. Draft & back puffing has never been a problem and it is very clean ...

This Stove has been excellent! We have burned more wood in this stove than you could imagine, it is our sole source of heat, and hard woods do the best in it, cottonwood burns up to quickly in this stove in my opinion, plus I'm not much for the amount of ash cottonwood creates. We have used solid round logs in it with the circumference of a dinner plate, and they burn excellent all night (with ...

I was a little nervous about buying this stove after reading some of the reviews on this site. After going to a few different dealers and talking with them I decided to purchase the Dutchwest 2462 XL with the cat and have not been disappointed at all. This stove is replacing my VC Defiant that we have used for the last 26 years. We have had no problems with back puffing and the cat temp. is ...

I have been using wood burning stoves for the past 32 years and have never had a problem with back puffing. I have persistent problems with this stove. When I go to "contact" on the Vermont Castings web site I am referred to my dealer. My dealer is useless. They have no clue what to do. I can't understand why Vermont Castings in disinterested in this problem.
