I don't hae much to compare too since this is the only wood burning appliance I've lived with long term. That said, it has provided excellent heat to my small drafty 100+ year old brick row house in Washington DC. it definitely works best with dense, seasoned wood like oak, cherry, etc. It has excellent draft and can easily overfire which can damage the firebricks and air tube. The blower has always been out of balance and often makes a racket, so we keep it near the lowest setting. The door needs adjustment every year or two and I should probably replace the gasket. All that said, this thing has been in place since December 2003 and has not had any major issues, and gets used on average about 4 hours a day each winter. Often a lot more- the forced air heat in my house sucks and this is the only way to be warm. When its been going for a few hours, the whole house is warm. Th secret with this stove is to get it supper hot and then keep the damper almost all the way shut, and don't let it burn down too far. With the damper closed all the way and a tightly banked fire, there will be good coals in the morning to start the next fire with. Also, I got rid of the thermostatic button for the fan after the first year or two. Now I just turn it on when I want it going which is pretty much all the time when there is a fire burning anyway. I'm only giving a four in ease of use because I think with the small size firebox and single air control it takes a bit of a learning curve to get the most benefit from this stove. That, and no firewood sellers around here reliably provide stove cuts i.e. 16" or less. They always end up bringing stuff that is too long, and I end up cutting them down. If you cut your own wood this wont be an issue. BTW, I go through about 3/4 to a full cord per season, with almost daily fires from the time I get home from work and all day during the weekends. Pretty much any day under 45 degrees it is needed. Gas forced air is the primary heat. Also, that is a real cord not some city-dweller fake "face cord" rip off. :)

One of the better investments I’ve made in the last few years. The stove works like a charm. I only give it a 4 because I hate managing the wood that goes into it.
