Removing Ashes from Your Stove and Rekindling a Fire

Tips for how to handle the ash that accumulates in the firebox and how to rekindle a fire from hot coals.

Ash Accumulation
Now that you have a few burns under your belt, you've probably noticed how ashes start to accumulate at the front of the firebox in your stove. You can remove these ashes without jarring the hot coals behind, towards the back of the firebox.

Most modern wood-burning stoves work best when you remove what ash you can in the morning before the fire for the day is built.

Rekindling a Fire
To rekindle a fire from hot coals, rake the charcoal away from the embers towards the front of the firebox where the combustion air (secondary air) enters. Place wood pieces on and behind the coals. Open the air intakes fully and leave them open until the pieces of wood are burning well and charring. After about 20 minutes or so, close down the air intakes and start to regulate fire.
