List of EPA Certified Non-Catalytic and Catalytic Wood Stoves from March 2008

If you’re wondering which stoves in use or on the market in the United States are certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), download the agency’s most recent update to its List of EPA Certified Wood Stoves.

All wood heating appliances subject to the New Source Performance Standard for Residential Wood Heaters under the Clean Air Act offered for sale in the United States are required to meet these emission limits. An EPA certified wood stove can be identified by a temporary paper label attached to the front of the stove and a permanent metal (note EPA’s example) label affixed to the back or side of the wood stove.

Each EPA certified wood stove or wood heating appliance is tested by an accredited laboratory to meet a particulate emissions limit of 7.5 grams per hour for non-catalytic wood stoves and 4.1 grams per hour for catalytic wood stoves, except in the State of Washington, where these values are 4.5 grams per hour for non-cat wood stoves and 2.5 grams per hour for catalytic wood stoves.

Just to illustrate how significant these new emission standards are for wood stoves, many older stoves from the 1970s and 1980s that still may be in use commonly put our over 40 grams of particulate emissions in way more smoke than necessary. Switch and upgrade to a certified stove and several states provide tax incentives for doing so. Canada does not currently have a certification program, but does recommend the purchase of EPA certified stoves.
