With the high price of heating oil and electricity in many places, a lot of people are considering buying a wood stove. A good bet is to go with an EPA Phase II catalytic stove.

These stoves, no matter what manufacturer you go with, are required to deliver 72% or better efficiency. The EPA tests the stoves it approves to ensure that 72% of the energy in wood, released from burning, is deliverable into the surrounding area.

Not only are approved catalytic stoves highly efficient, they can also reduce emissions by up to 90% and they will greatly decrease creosote build-up, a common problem with non-catalytic wood stoves. Catalytic stoves produce longer burn times per load and can also save up to 1/3 what it costs to burn with less efficient stoves. If used correctly, a catalytic stove can save you up to one less cord of wood out of every three you burn.
